FRENCH DEFENCE · LESSON 5 OF 6

The Classical
Variation

Develop with 3…Nf6, invite e5 and retreat to d7 with a purpose: the knight supports both central pawn breaks.

1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.e5 Nfd7

← Course contents

1. Why the knight belongs on d7

After 4.e5, the f6-knight must move. Returning to g8 would lose time and leave Black without pressure. On d7 the knight supports …c5, helps prepare …f6 and may later reach b6 or f8.

The knight temporarily blocks the c8-bishop, so Black must not remain frozen. The position makes sense because the pawn breaks will change the centre and create routes for the pieces.

2. Attack d4 first

The normal first strike is …c5. White’s d4-pawn supports e5, so attacking d4 makes the whole centre less stable. Develop the b8-knight to c6, then use …Qb6 or exchanges on d4 according to White’s setup.

If White closes with c3, Black still has a target. If White exchanges cxd5, Black gains open lines and must choose the correct recapture. Keep asking what happens to the d4-pawn after every exchange.

3. The …f6 break needs preparation

Once d4 is under pressure, …f6 attacks e5 directly. This can open the f-file and activate the queen and rook, but the pawn move also weakens the king and e6. Check White’s forcing replies before committing.

Count attackers and defenders on e5, but go further: calculate exf6, f5, checks on h5 or b5 and sacrifices around the king. If …f6 is not tactically sound, improve a piece and try again later.

4. Do not let the centre distract you from development

A common setup uses …c5, …Nc6, …Qb6, …Be7 and castling. The queen move is useful only if it adds real pressure and cannot be chased repeatedly. The c8-bishop may develop to d7 or b7 after …b6.

In a closed centre, it is easy to believe the king is safe in the middle. Pawn breaks can open the position suddenly. Castle before the centre explodes unless concrete calculation justifies the delay.

5. Decide whether the break is ready

Example board: inspect …f6

Black to move. Name what …f6 attacks and what it weakens.

The …f6 checklist

  • Is my king safe enough for the f-file to open?
  • Is d4 already under pressure?
  • What happens after exf6?
  • Does White have a forcing check or sacrifice?
  • Which piece becomes active when the centre opens?
